California requires battery backup on new openers

Since 2019, California requires new and replacement automatic openers to include a battery backup, so your door still works in a power outage. If your opener predates that, replacing it brings you up to code and keeps you from being stranded during an outage.

Frequently Asked Questions

The most common questions that people ask are listed below. Still have questions? Click the button below to connect with our team.

My motor runs, but the door won't move—what's wrong?

plus symbal

Usually a stripped main gear or drive sprocket — the motor spins but no longer drives the trolley. It's a common, affordable repair we carry parts for, and we can often fix it the same visit.

Should I repair my opener or replace it

plus symbal

If the unit is under ~10–15 years old and the fix is minor, repair usually makes sense. Older units, or ones without battery backup or safety sensors, are often better replaced — we'll give you both options with clear pricing.

Does a new opener really need battery backup in California?

plus symbal

Yes. Since 2019, California requires new and replacement automatic openers to include a battery backup so the door still operates during a power outage. Every opener we install meets this requirement.

What opener brands do you work on?

plus symbal

All major brands—LiftMaster, Genie, Chamberlain, Marantec, and Craftsman—for both repairs and new installations, including smart Wi-Fi models.

Why does my door reverse before it closes?

plus symbal

Almost always the safety photo-eye sensors near the floor are misaligned, dirty, or obstructed. We realign and test them so the door closes reliably — and confirm the whole safety system is working.

Can you install a smart Wi-Fi opener?

plus symbal

Absolutely. We install and set up Wi-Fi openers that let you open, close and monitor the door from your phone, then walk you through the app and program every remote and keypad before we leave.
